Dental erosion refers to loss of enamel from exposure to excess acid.
This can arise from:
- Dietary factors – soft drinks, sport drinks, citrus juices
- Morning sickness over a long period exposing teeth to stomach acids
- Gastric reflux – particularly at night
- Medications – some medicines cause dry mouth issues, which predisposes enamel loss
- Some systemic illnesses
Any loss of structure is a matter for concern. It is necessary to determine why the problem exists, and provide a solution.
Untreated, it can cause sensitivity, cosmetic issues (darkening, staining, altered shapes), and if severe can reach the nerve and create a need for root canal treatment.
