Snoring can be a huge problem for the partner of the snorer! Snoring issues can be fairly reliably solved these days with oral appliances that are comfortable.
Snoring may also be a symptom of a much more serious issue – sleep apnoea. This is a very under-diagnosed health problem, with potentially very serious consequences.
Untreated, people have a much higher likelihood of suffering heart attacks and strokes. It is also associated with acid reflux (Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD), tooth grinding and wear, depression and other issues.
Children with snoring or nocturnal breathing issues may be at increased risk of ADHD.
Dental Appliances to help - often a good alternative to a CPAP machine:
The cause is obstruction of the airway while sleeping, usually the tongue dropping back and causing a blockage. It may relate to restrictions from tonsils. Tests called ‘Sleep Studies’ need to be performed, in association with a sleep physician, to determine the extent of the problem. These can often be done at home, with portable equipment.
Treatment is often provided with dental devices called Mandibular Advancement Splints, that keep the airway open at night. Some people need a device called a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine.
Any treatments we provide are in conjunctions with Sleep Dentistry Clinics and Laboratories, associated with specialist medical Sleep Physicians.
